Here are some angles on this show that we hope might interest you. We are able to make these people available to you throughout the week preceding BENEATH THE SEA.Report the show from underwaterShould you have a newsperson who scuba dives, and/or is willing to get into scuba gear and enter either the four-foot pool, or the nine-foot tank, -- you could report on the show from underwater. The ``Try Scuba" portion is ideal for this interaction. Also, new, underwater communication devices allow that person to speak from underwater, and a B-Roll of shark footage from the Bahamas can add action.. If no one wants to get wet, the same communication devices will allow anyone in the tank to communicate with anyone outside the tank. Further, BENEATH THE SEA has available Paul Jacobson of AVATAR Productions, an award winning professional cameraman with many on-air credits who is willing to take his underwater video camera into the pool or tank for you to provide you with a feed. Of all the shipwreck's man has discovered, the TITANIC is the lady that seduces us all … Ralph White, Cinematographer and Editor, is the man that holds the record for the most number of dives to the 12,000 foot deep wreck of the TITANIC. His presentation about this tragic lady of the sea is a dramatic and touching eulogy. In 1985 Ralph White documented the expedition that found the WRECK OF THE TITANIC -- 1987 co-directed the salvage operation and photography of over 1400 artifacts from the Titanic's debris field -- 1991 he returned to this great lady as the submersible cameraman for the IMAX 70mm feature film TITANICA -- 1995 he was back again as the Expedition leader and Second unit cameraman for Jim Cameron's 20th Century Fox feature TITANIC. Ralph is a tall, thin man with a seafarer look about him. He is a fine talker, he sprinkles his stories with tales of the sea and a life spent on and under the sea. When Ralph talks about the Titanic – the ship or the movie – he speaks with an authority few men have. Ralph is interesting and personable, with a gift-of-gab. He loves what he does, and what he has done. Any question about the Titanic primes a pump whose well is filled with first-hand stories of the ship and the sea that holds her, told with irony and humor. He is a man you would want to sit with over dinner. NOTE: SLIDES & FILM CAN BE MADE AVAILABLE, ALSO VIDEO TRANSFER. Jean-Michel Cousteau Jean-Michel Cousteau is the son of Jacques Cousteau. Jean-Michel was born in 1938 in Toulon, France at the beginning of World War II. He has spent his life exploring the oceans of the world from the research vessels Calypso and Alcyone and communicating to the people of all nations and of all generations his love for the oceans and the ideas and spirits he finds active in them. Jean-Michel is a passionate and eloquent spokesman for the oceans. Since 1989 he has written a regular column for the Los Angeles Times Syndicate that appears in over seventy newspapers worldwide Jean-Michel Cousteau has been the Producer and/or Executive Producer of 59 television specials; including the 39-part series: Cousteau's Rediscovery of the World -- from which several of the programs were nominated individually for the Emmy and Cable Ace awards. Recently Jean-Michel completed filming a television special: Destroyer at Peace -- about the sinking of a Russian Naval Destroyer for the creation of an artificial reef in the Cayman Islands. Jean-Michel is at Beneath the Sea to accept an award for his continuing service to the dive community and the oceans of the world in general. While here, he will present his most recent production: Keiko – A Promise kept. The Free Willy Keiko Foundation and the Jean-Michel Cousteau Institute have collectively joined forces on a one-hour film documenting the adventure of relocating Keiko from his Oregon Coast Aquarium tank to a floating pen in Iceland. The relocation took place in September of 1998, and served as the first step in returning Keiko, of ``Free Willy" fame, to his native Icelandic waters and an enclosed bay which serves as a ``halfway house" to freedom. When and if he chooses. Keiko himself will determine his :own destiny". The Keiko film has been produced by Jean-Michel Cousteau and the Jean-Michel Cousteau Institute on behalf of the Free Willy Keiko Foundation, a private, non-profit organization. NOTE: VIDEO CLIP CAN BE MADE AVAILABLE. Cuba Sells Russian Warship Captain Wayne Hasson of the Aggressor fleet and Jean- Michel Cousteau both went to Cuba and bought a Russian Frigate to sink as a fish reef and divers attraction off shore at Cayman Brac. This is a unique story. Wayne and jean-Michel tell it with humor and with the seriousness both of the purchase and the transportation of the destroyer to Cayman Brac. Neither lets you miss the implication that anyone can buy a Russian man-o-war. The sellers will even throw in a submarine to cinch the bargain. But you need hear Captain Wayne or jean-Michel tell this story. NOTE: THERE IS A VIDEO CLIP WITH THIS STORY.Sharks Wherever you find divers, there too will you find sharks, And shark stories! Now, shark stories come in three varieties, and you will find at least one of each variety at every gathering: 1) ``Sharks are pussycats, all PR and no substance!" – 2) ``You may be right, but I was diving in (insert name) when a (insert shark name) pinned my buddy and me ( pick one: against the reef; inside the wreck) until we were almost out-of-air." – 3) `` Pussycat? Hah! Look at these scars!!! They ain't from no pussycat!" The Nassau Scuba Center will be at Beneath the Sea with their chainmail shark suit. Designed to protect you from the bite of the shark during feeding, these are full suits that pull-on over whatever else it is you are wearing. Importantly, they offer protection from the bite of the beast. For that reason, when suited-up, the Nassau Scuba Center takes you on the original Bahamas shark suit adventure – up close, and personal with huge Bahaman Sharks. At Beneath the Sea you may try on one of these suits and see if you are willing to sign-up for a trip to the jaws of the beast. NOTE: VIDEO CLIPS ARE AVAILABLE. Try Scuba? You say you have always wanted to try SCUBA? At Beneath the Sea you can try SCUBA and meet the BAYWATCH team At Beneath the Sea there will be an exciting new program called Dive `O ` Rama. It is a new program created to introduce new divers to the sport of scuba diving. It is your invitation to have a complimentary scuba experience at the show. It's a chance to breathe underwater in a supervised pool setting. Taking the plunge has never been so easy as it is this weekend at Beneath the Sea – a complimentary Discover Scuba experience, a chance to win prizes, including a guest appearance on BAYWATCH. Try scuba at Dive O' Rama, with BAYWATCH stars to keep you company. Equipment Demonstrations … In the same pool as ``Dive O' Rama," Dive New England will demonstrate kayaks, rebreathers, and underwater communication devices. Of all the new equipment at the show, the two prevailing stories are rebreathers and underwater communication devices One of the swiftest growing sports in America today is wilderness kayaking. Beneath the Sea will present demonstration of kayaking skills, and offer beginners some advice on their use in the large pool on the convention floor. Try your hand at kayaking and see if you would like to schedule yourself for an adventure by kayak. Hard Hat Diving Demonstration Fantasea Scuba of New Jersey has a nine-foot high-by-six-foot-square tank where they will be demonstrating old and new diving equipment. Hard hat divers will share this tank with the latest in new dive equipment. Saturday and Sunday at Beneath the Sea teams of Wreck Divers, Salvors, and Underwater Archeologists will face-off in The Great Wreck Debate. The question is: Should scuba divers and Salvors be allowed to remove artifacts from wrecks. Indeed, should anyone other than authorized Underwater Archeologists and Historians be permitted to dive on the wrecks at all. If organizations, such as UNESCO, have their way, the recovering of artifacts, or even visiting some shipwrecks could be prohibited by a proposed International Convention for the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage. Into this controversy come the organized voices of the professional Salvors and the Academic arguments of the Archeologists. The pleas and arguments of the average diver, too often disorganized and dissonant, could be lost in the political din of managed news events. The Great Wreck Debate is a forum where all the arguments may be heard in their time and place. For many divers, diving is not a simple form of Eco-tourism but a way of experiencing history. Air tanks and masks serve as time machines, allowing access to historic relics that non-divers will only see in pictures. Seminars and Workshops … Beneath the Sea is an interactive weekend, filled with unusual workshops and seminars. Many of these seminars are by world-renowned explorers, travelers, and underwater-photographers whose tales from the remote corners of our oceans will keep you mesmerized and beguiled. Perhaps exotic travel is your dream. Pick the presentation that answers your wanderlust: Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia, Truk Lagoon, Australia's Great Barrier Reef, the Solomon Islands, and the Coral Sea come quickly to mind. You will soon be absorbed by the gentle giants, colorful beings, shipwrecks, treasures, jungle, natives and always, the astounding beauty of the world that lies hidden just beneath the sea. Ocean Pals is having a party for children … On the children's side, OCEAN PALS, an environmental awareness through art program, will be presenting a series of awards on Sunday to the finalists of their national poster contest. The children really do exceptional and insightful art. This year's theme is Wild and Endangered: Sharks aren't Bad Guys. Sunday, March 28th, OCEAN PALS will have a special program for all children, beginning at 10AM and lasting into the mid-afternoon. Beginning at 10:30 John Livoti will conduct a hands-on workshop for all the children presenting a discovery of the engaging creatures to be found beneath the sea. It is quite special to watch a young child touch a fish, crab, or lobster while they take a voyage of discovery of what that animal so distinguished. At 11:00Am, Jean-Michel Cousteau will come and visit the party. He too will take the youngsters on a voyage beneath the sea. After wards, Jean-Michel will visit with the children, talk with them, answer their questions, and take their ideas into places their young minds have yet to visualize. Jean-Michel is an inspiring story-teller, employing wit and humor. Noon will bring the thrilling moment for all this years poster contest winners. The award ceremony is followed by a Sea of Sweets Party and Sing-Along with ``Kids World" recording star Michael Aloi, that pied-piper of children's concerts |
